Las Vegas, NV – On Monday, December 19, 2022, the Nevada Hispanic Legislative Caucus voted to elect a new leadership ahead of the 82nd Nevada Legislative Session, which takes place from February 6th, 2023, to June 6th, 2023.
The Hispanic community in Nevada now comprises almost a third of our population. The best way to advance the values of the Silver State is by promoting equality and embracing diversity, making the NHLC role crucial to deliver and represent every Nevadan.
During the 81st Legislative Session, the NHLC delivered many victories to Nevada families, reducing systemic inequalities and disparities in healthcare access, education, economic opportunity, housing, and environmental justice – but more work is needed.
“It is truly an honor to be elected as the incoming Chair of the Nevada Hispanic Legislative Caucus. We are grateful for the work that Assemblywoman Torres has led these last few years, and we are excited to continue the efforts to support Latinos throughout Nevada.” Said Nevada State Senator Fabian Doñate and continued, “Within these past few years, Latino families have been disproportionately affected by the detriments of the COVID-19 pandemic. The NHLC is committed to uplifting Latino families by ensuring our community receives access to good paying jobs, access to health care, and high-quality education.”
“The Nevada Hispanic Legislative caucus plays a critical role in empowering Latino and immigrant voices in our state. As an immigrant and as a Latina it is an honor to be elected to serve as the Vice-chair of the Nevada Hispanic Legislative Caucus. I continue to be committed to creating a better Nevada for all.” Said Assemblywoman Elaine Marzola
“As chair of the Nevada Hispanic Legislative Caucus, we advocated for Latino families throughout the 2021 legislative session. Our most notable policy achievement was the expansion of the UNLV immigration clinic, which received a 1 million dollar state and county investment. Returning from the session, our caucus participated in community events that promoted civic engagement and access to resources in our community.
In the Spring of 2022, under Senator Doñate’s leadership, we hosted a gala honoring the achievements of Latinos in our community, including Senator Cortez-Masto and state Senator Mo Denis. During the Fall of 2022, we created the ‘Semillas’ program to mentor the next generation of Latino leaders.” Said Assemblywoman Selena Torres, adding, “I look forward to Sen. Donate and Asm. Marzola’s leadership.”
The new roles are as follows:
NHLC Chair — State Senator Fabian Doñate (SD 10)
NHLC Vice-Chair — Assemblywoman Elaine Marzola (AD 21)
NHLC Secretary/Treasurer —Assemblywoman Selena Torres (AD 03)
