Carson City, NV – One hour before the Nevada Latino legislators are sworn into the 82nd (2023) Session of the Legislature, they will be hosting a Press Conference to discuss their priority bills for the legislative session and their new name. The legislators will be joined by their families, who are flying into Carson City to be part of the celebration. Media is invited to be part of the ceremony after the press conference.
The Hispanic community in Nevada now comprises almost a third of our population and the Latino Caucus believes that the best way to advance the values of the Silver State is by promoting equality and embracing diversity. Currently, the legislature lacks a proper percentage of Latino representation, however, the NLLC will continue to voice and advance the Latino voices of Nevada.
During the 81st Legislative Session, the NLLC delivered many victories to Nevada families, reducing systemic inequalities and disparities in healthcare access, education, economic opportunity, housing, and environmental justice – but more work is needed.
For the 82nd Legislative Session, the NLLC plans to push forward the following priorities:
- Health Care: Increasing access to all healthcare services, regardless of background, location or immigration status.
- Education: Promoting support for our English Language Learner Students (ELL), diversifying the teacher pipeline, creating safer schools, and providing opportunities for underserved communities to access higher education through more funding.
- Language Access: Ensure that all state government agencies have the resources to implement their language access plans and increase translational services.
- Housing: Aggressively targeting housing policies throughout this upcoming session to help provide relief for Latinos across the state.
The Nevada Latino Legislative Caucus (NLLC) is dedicated to voicing and advancing, through the legislative process, issues affecting Latinos in Nevada for the purpose of increasing access and parity for all Nevadans. The Caucus envisions a Nevada where families may succeed, have equal access to justice, and have legislators that are demographically representative of the constituents they serve.
